In the East of the village there is the castle that once was the acropole of the old town of Lefkto. According to Pausanias, there were the temple of Athena and her statue. During the period 1204 - 1259 the castle reconstructed and named Bofor. During the summer, the sea and the crystal clear water is a provocation for the visitors. In the village there are two beaches, the one is known as the Stoupa beach and the other as Kalogria beach. From visotrs' point of view, in Stoupa one can find everything. Also, Kalamata is the ideal base for those who want to discover the secrets of Messinia, since it is situated in a central spot of the region and all the tourist and cultural destinations are not further than one hour in car. There are also several other churches around the town which are nice to visit. In Kalamata, as well as enjoying the beauty of the region and the hospitality of the locals, there is also the archaeological and folklore museum, and the library which houses over 60,000 volumes of work. Such attractions are a nice way to experience the history and past of the region, as well as the modern side of it. There are also plenty cultural events and festivals that take place throughout the year, to which everyone is invited.Kalamata is renowned as the place where the famous Kalamatianos dance originated. A perfect symbol for the rich culture and vibrancy of this region, the dance is widely known and you can easily find places throughout the town offering traditional performances, such as restaurants with regular evening entertainment. Tetrazio, at the northern end of Messinia, Neda, the only female-gender river of Greece, flows towards the gulf of Kiparissia. Kardamili is a spectacularly beautiful seaside village located in Mani, the coast of Greece defined by travel connoisseurs as the New Côte d'Azur. Set dramatically against a backdrop of crystalline aqua-blue waters, majestic cypress trees, wild olive groves, verdant rolling hills and distant snowcapped mountains, it is one of the prettiest of villages that overlook the calm seas and splendid sunsets of the Messinian Gulf. Voidokilia beach, which is situated at 12 km from the city of Pylos, in the north of the Navarino bay, is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, but maybe also in the Mediterranean Sea. The sheltered bay is referred to in Homer's Odyssey and archaeologists believe it was used by King Nestor as a port in ancient times.
