Welcome to the 2ND Half Marathon in Syros, the island of mastic gum, one of the most interesting islands in the Cyclades Aegean sea.
What
A Half Marathon and 5000 meters run/walk for adults. There will be also a 1500m run for children.
Where
Syros, one of the most interesting islands in Cyclades (3hrs from Athens) due to its unique combination of the Greek Classicism & Rennaisance styles, the Cycladic culture and its Roman Catholic & Orthodox history.
When
The 2nd Syros Half Marathon takes place on Sunday, 8th of June 2014, 17:30pm
Why
Because runners will enjoy a unique route starting in front of the “Apollon” theater by the Italian architect Campo (a miniature version of the La Scala in Milano) and finishing in the impressive Miaoulis square where the City Hall (designed by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller) is. The routes goes towards Megas Gialos and through the Manna, Azolimnos, Vari areas

Deadline registration
Registration is open until Thursday, 5th of June 2014. Participation can be obtained via online registration.
All races start from the Apollo theater and finish at the central Miaoulis square in front of the City Hall. The athletes run through several settlements Manna - Azolimnos – Vari – Megas Gialos. The athletes finish in front of the City Hall of Syros.
Race completion time limit
The time limit for finishing the race is three hours
Electronic timing and results
Electronic timing will be timed by a timing company. For this reason, the runners must wear the timing chip they will receive together with the number of participation from the registration centre.
Attention: Your time will not be registered and will not be included in the results if you do not have the timing chip placed according to the instructions
Health Coverage
In any case all runners participate solely at their own risk. The organizers or RunninGreece have no responsibility for whatever happens to the runners related to health issues or is due to lack of preventive medical check. It is highly recommended that the participants undergo a thorough medical examination before entering the race. The organizers will not ask for medical certificates from any athlete (male and female), since they all participate at their own exclusive risk and responsibility (children are at the liability of their parents or guardians). We will also provide offers for special health checkup for all runners, and members of their families.
Aid Stations
Along the route of the Half Marathon and the race of 5K km will be stations to support the runners. At the start and finish stations and at the support stations of the runners bottled water will be available to all attendees.
Awards
Medal and diploma are awarded to each of the first three winners of the general classification Men and Women. To the first athlete (in Men and in Women categories) a cup will also be awarded. To all the runners who will finish the race a commemorative medal and a diploma of participation will be given.

This is the island where Greek tradition and western influence come to a harmonious marriage. Ermoúpoli (meaning “the city of Hermes”) is the island’s capital town and has been the first important trade and industrial centre of the country in the 19th century. Evidence of this glorious past can be seen on public buildings (the City Hall, the Customs Office, “Apollo” theatre), on the neoclassical houses and at the beautiful squares. Due to its economic activity, Ermoúpoli has been called “Manchester of Greece” and the history of its years of blossom is exhibited in the Industrial Museum.
The Orthodox community has contributed some outstanding religious monuments to the architecture of Ermoúpoli such as the churches of Metamórphossi tou Sotíros (Transfiguration of Jesus Christ), St Nicolas the Rich (Áyios Nikólaos Ploússios), Dormition of the Mother of God (Koímissis tis Theotókou).
The medieval quarter of the Roman Catholic community and the fortress-like St George’s cathedral are on St George hill, also named Áno Sýros (meaning upper Sýros). Go up the stairs to the top of the hill and through the narrow streets, by the traditional whitewashed houses, the archways and the open spaces with a breathtaking view of the island.
The great number of beautiful beaches will delight the sea and sand lovers: Vári, Foínikas, Yalissás and Kíni, as well as Possidonia or Dellagrazia, the beach of a village with many neoclassical mansions with colourful orchards.
Sýros is also well-known for its gastronomic peculiarities. Halva pie (a pie made of thyme honey and roasted almonds), loukoúmi (a delight made of water, starch and sugar), “loosa” ham, fennel sausages and the San Mihalis spicy cheese (appellation d'origine contrôlée/”protected designation of origin") will no doubt satisfy even the most demanding taste buds.
Internationally acclaimed festivals are held on Sýros, offering a wide range of choices and covering any taste, e.g. The International Cyclades Music Festival, the Classical Music Festival, the Ermoupólia and the Musical May.
Syros is an island with a vibrant culture and a strong passion for arts. Therefore, visitors should not neglect visiting museums and galleries, but should also relish walking around picturesque streets of traditional villages, and exploring gorgeous beaches and impressive caves. Some of the most interesting sightseeing are: Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus, Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church, Archaeological Museum of Syros, Industrial Museum of Ermoupolis, Gallery of the Cyclades, Replicas Museum of Cycladic Art.
Golden sand and transparent waters await swimmers in the wonderful beaches of Syros. Whether looking for organized beaches in Syros like Galissas and Azolimnos, or for private beaches offering isolation visitors will find their ideal one.
Some of them are: Poseidonia or Dellagracia, Achladi Beach, Lotos Beach, Galissas Beach, Varvarousa Beach, Ambela Beach, Fokiotrypes Beach, Armeos or Agia Pakou.
