Tinos is a beyond spaces spiritual island. A place of pilgrimage and worship, Tinos owes its unique place in the Greek psyche thanks to the Church of Panayia Meyalohari, Great Grace, also known as the Church of Evangelistria of Tinos, Our Lady of Good Tidings.
Located between Andros and Mykonos, Tinos has beaches to match and perhaps some of the most well-preserved villages in all of the Cyclades.
Each of the villages is a revelation. A strong tradition of marble carving is to be admired in chapels, fountains, arches and sculptures, particularly in Pyrgos, the village that some of Greece’s greatest artists, Gyzis, Lytras, Chalepas, Filippotis and Sohos, call their own.
The white splendor of the material blends well with typical Cycladic architecture. Whitewashed narrow alleys, neat houses and picturesque churches create a serene environment, where fuchsia-coloured bougainvilleas overflowing through walls and balconies add the right dose of intensity.
Amidst the countryside, hundreds of dovecotes resembling tiny fortresses are well preserved and worth an exploration. With their geometrical patterns, they attract the doves, whose systematic breeding began with the Venetians in the 18th century.
Tinos is a very interesting place to visit. One can enjoy its unspoiled architecture, its picturesque villages, its beautiful beaches and its traditional culture and way of living that has been going on through the years.
The pan-hellenic festivities in honour of Virgin Mary on August 15 are accompanied by other festivals like those in Tsiknias and Exombourgo and the gastronomic feasts involving artichoke and raki in Falatados as well as the festival of honey in Kampos. Tinos is the ideal place for nature lovers, architecture, art and tradition, and the perfect answer to the relative expectations.
Pyrgos is the largest village on the island with its 400 residents. Home to some of the greatest Greek artists like Y.Chalepas (sculptor), N.Lytras (painter), D.Philippotes (sculptor) among others. Walking past the alleys of Pyrgos one can encounter art in every corner, house, church or square.
Pyrgos took its name from an ancient tower which was built before the 16th century in order to secure the whereabouts. The village flourished during the 18th and 19th century mainly because of the marble art and shipping.
The most important sights of the village are the two cathedrals, Agios Nikolaos and Agios Dimitrios, the Museum of Marble Crafts, the cemetery where the visitor can admire marbled works of art and stone carvings of local artists. Moreover it’s the Tinian Artists Museum, located at the entrance of the village right next to the house where Y.Chalepas lived which is also a museum these days.
In order to prevent and maintain the artistic history of the region, a Preparatory School of Marble Arts has been running since 1955.
The Cycladic architecture is preserved unharmed in Pyrgos for centuries and many think of the village as an open air museum of folk art.
